How one is made.

Every cassette on this page goes through the same seven stages. This is a malaria antigen card, RDT-MAL.102. The strips are the same minus the plastic housing. Immunofluorescence cartridges are a different product and are not made this way.

Nitrocellulose membrane

A roll of nitrocellulose arrives with a stated pore size. Everything the test does happens on this strip: the sample walks along it by capillary action, and nothing pushes it.

  2. Antibody stripingA dispensing head lays two lines wet: the test line for the malaria antigen, the control line that proves the test ran.
  3. LaminationSample pad, conjugate pad and absorbent pad are laminated either side onto a backing card.
  4. CuttingThe laminated sheet is cut across into strips, each one a complete test.
  5. AssemblyA strip is clipped between the two halves of the housing, the well over the pad and the window over the lines.
  6. PouchingA desiccant goes in, the jaws close, and the foil is sealed and lot-coded.
  7. CartonFifty pouches to a printed carton, released against the batch record before it leaves.

How a test reads.

  • Result windowTwo lines. The control line (C) shows the test ran; the test line (T) is the result. Each datasheet states how to read that product.
  • Sample typesSerum, plasma or whole blood, depending on the test. Each datasheet states which, and the volume of the drop.
  • POCT kitsPoint-of-care packs ship with a lancet and a swab, so a fingertip sample can be taken where the test is run.
  • StorageNo cold chain in transit or on the shelf. Storage conditions and shelf life are printed on the box and in the datasheet.
